Understanding SSDI Benefits: What You’ve Earned
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is essentially a federally mandated insurance policy that you paid for through your FICA payroll taxes. If you have worked long enough and recently enough, you are insured under this program.
If your claim is approved, the benefits extend beyond just a monthly check. The following is a breakdown of what is available to you.
Monthly Cash Payments
The primary benefit of SSDI is a monthly cash payment. The amount you receive is not based on how "disabled" you are, but rather on your average lifetime earnings before your disability began.
- Cost-of-Living Adjustments (COLA): Your monthly benefit typically increases annually to keep up with inflation.
- Family benefits: If you qualify for SSDI, certain members of your family, such as dependent children or a spouse, may also be eligible for partial "auxiliary" benefits.
Medicare Eligibility
One of the most valuable aspects of SSDI is the transition to government-sponsored healthcare.
- The 24-month rule: Generally, after you have received SSDI cash payments for two years, you automatically become eligible for Medicare (including Part A hospital insurance and Part B medical insurance).
- Exception: If you have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the waiting period may be waived.
